Bejo began the organic process over nine years ago, and has made a major commitment to this market, putting some of our best and most popular hybrid material into the program. We screen our hybrids and breeding material under organic conditions in a number of sites worldwide, including trialing and production here in North America.
Bejo's breeders focus on qualities important to the organic grower, such as strong root systems and enhanced disease resistance, along with traits important to the organic consumer, such as excellent flavor and nutritional characteristics. We use time-honored, classical means of breeding our organic material, with careful scientific methods dedicated to fulfilling the needs of the organic market.
Organic production takes place in multiple sites around the world, taking advantage of the very best climates, most fertile soils, and diverse biology. Our professional organic seed growers take great care to produce the highest quality seed. Bejo demands the same superior seed quality we're known for from our organic production. We work with organic certifiers around the world to make sure our seed meets all of the organic standards set forth by the USDA-NOP program. Our seed is also certified to the EU standards. In late 2007 we introduced our new, added-value white filmcoat onto organic carrot, beet and onion seed. As of January 2009, the coating is on all Bejo organic seed except cress and coriander. Approved for use in certified organic operations by NOP and EU, this coating has multiple benefits to organic growers: improved visibility of seed in the soil, smoother passage through equipment, and exclusive instant recognition of a quality Bejo product. The organic sector continues to experience significant growth, and Bejo is here and ready to grow with it.
